Your Mission Field?

Ever since I was a young girl, I had a desire to be involved in missions. My heart yearned to travel the world and share the wonderful gospel message. Since being in Romania, I’ve realised something very important… Being on the mission field doesn’t always meet your expectations. 

This last week, I heard a wonderful yet piercing quote by Corrie Ten Boom. (If you don’t know her story, take time to read it. She was a wonderful woman of faith and compassion.)   Her words struck me to the core!

“A person is either a missionary or a mission field.” – Corrie Ten Boom

As I mentioned earlier, I always had a desire to be a missionary so I “thought” like one. In my mind, I was the one who would tell people about Jesus. But, I can honestly say it was not so black and white. I found out there were times where I was indeed in need of a missionary. I needed someone to be an encouragement and to be compassionate.

THE GREAT COMMISSION

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

We’ve been given a great responsibility to share the gospel of Jesus to the whole world. In the past, when I thought of missions, I always looked to “the uttermost part of the earth”. However, that’s not all missions is. We’re called to reach our cities (Jerusalem), reach our Counties/States (Judaea), our countries (Samaria) and then the whole world. Missions begins at home. If you feel a burden for missions, that doesn’t simply mean for foreign countries but it could be on your own doorstep.

If you have a desire to be a Missionary, reach those around you. That’s your mission field. God will open the right doors in His time.

DON’T SIT STILL 

We’re all guilty of it. Missions isn’t about waiting for the ‘right country’ to open, it’s about simply share the gospel with lost souls. If we ever get to the point where we think the we are too good for our local areas, then maybe we are the ones that need the missionary. Don’t let time discourage you from fulfilling your calling, if you’re called to Global missions, practice through local missions. Don’t sit still. Twiddling thumbs never have good results.

BE COURAGEOUS

Don’t be afraid to do something different and stand out from the norm. Teach bible studies, talk to your neighbours about the love of our Saviour or be the first to start campus ministry. The possibilities are endless, and everything you do for the Kingdom of God will be a great asset for wherever He calls you to go.

“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:36-38

Love God and love people! Our hearts should be “moved with compassion” whenever we see a lost soul.

“Missions is wherever there is a lost soul.”
